Running Pace Calculator

Solve for pace, time, or distance from the other two values. Use km or miles, min/km or min/mile, and optional even-split charts for 5K through the marathon.

What does a running pace calculator do?

For runners who need the missing number, not a fitness score.

A running pace calculator solves the pace-time-distance relationship. If you know any two, you can find the third. That is the right tool for “what pace is a 3:30 marathon?” or “how long is 10K at 5:00/km?” It is not a VDOT estimate and it does not invent training zones from a race result.

Calculator

Convert pace, time, and distance, then optionally build a split table.

Inputs

Choose the value to solve, enter the other two, and optionally build a split chart.

Enter two values

Fill the two known fields to calculate the missing one.

Split chart

Even splits at the current pace. Choose marathon for a marathon pace chart.

SplitElapsed
Calculate a pace to see the split table.

How to use this pace calculator

1

Enter the two values you already know

Choose whether you want pace, time, or distance. Fill the other two fields and pick a race preset if you are targeting 5K, 10K, a half marathon, or a marathon.

2

Read the missing value

The calculator uses even-split arithmetic: time = pace × distance. It does not adjust for hills, heat, or fading late in a race.

3

Open the split chart if you need checkpoints

Pick a race distance to see even-split times at your current pace. That is a marathon pace chart only in the even-split sense, not a predicted race result.

Marathon pace calculator and pace chart

Use the marathon preset when you want even-split goal pace and checkpoint times.

Enter a goal marathon time to get min/km or min/mile, or enter a pace to get an even-split finish time. The table below shows common even-split marathon times. Real races usually cost more than the math once fatigue, weather, and hills appear.

Example even-split marathon times from common goal paces
PaceEven-split marathon time
4:00 /km2:48:47
4:30 /km3:09:53
5:00 /km3:30:59
5:30 /km3:52:04
6:00 /km4:13:10

These finish times assume a constant pace on 42.195 km. They are not equivalent-performance predictions.

Pace calculator vs VDOT

This page owns pace, time, and distance. VDOT owns race-result fitness and training paces.

Use this running pace calculator when you already have a goal time or a target pace and need the other number, or a split chart. Use the VDOT calculator when you have a recent race result and want Daniels-style training paces or equivalent race predictions. The two tools answer different questions.

FAQ

How do I calculate running pace?
Divide time by distance. A 50-minute 10K is 5:00 per kilometer. This pace calculator does that conversion and also solves the other direction: time from pace and distance, or distance from time and pace.
Can I use this as a marathon pace calculator?
Yes. Choose the marathon preset, enter a goal time or a goal pace, and read the missing value. You can also open the split table for an even-split marathon pace chart in km or miles.
What is a marathon pace chart?
On this page it is an even-split checkpoint table: each kilometer or mile at the same pace, plus the 42.195 km finish. It is not a predicted race result and it does not add fade, hills, or weather.
Does this calculate VDOT or training paces?
No. This tool only converts pace, time, and distance. For VDOT, equivalent races, and Easy / Threshold / Interval paces from a race result, use the VDOT calculator.
Should I use min/km or min/mile?
Use the unit you train with. The calculator converts between min/km and min/mile without changing the underlying speed.
Why is an even-split time faster than my last race?
Because the chart assumes a constant pace. Most races include slowing, course cost, and conditions. Treat the chart as a checkpoint plan, then adjust on the day.
