Effective VO2max for Endurance Decisions
Trainingload.ai estimates VO2max/VDOT from available activity evidence. Treat the result as a performance-response trend, not a laboratory measurement, diagnosis, or daily readiness score. Its value comes from comparing similar activities over time and interpreting the trend with execution and load.
Before you begin
- Import several recent, comparable endurance activities and wait until they are Ready.
- Check maximum heart rate, running thresholds, units, and sport type in your profile.
- Prefer activities with reliable pace or power and heart-rate streams.
- Exclude warm-ups, recovery walks, sensor failures, and unlike sports from a like-for-like comparison.
- Choose a review question, such as whether the current running block is producing a stable positive response.
1. Open the trend, not just the current value
Open Dashboard, select one sport, and choose a time range that contains several comparable sessions. Select the VO2Max fitness-status card to open its history.
The current value is a snapshot. The history is more useful because it shows whether estimates are stable, drifting, or dominated by one activity.
Review a running-only history with comparable Ready activities, then investigate any outlier before interpreting the direction.
2. Check whether the activities are comparable
Open the activities behind the trend and compare:
- Sport and workout purpose.
- Duration and terrain.
- Pace or power quality.
- Heart-rate availability and sensor reliability.
- Heat, altitude, wind, fatigue, and race effort.
- The estimation source shown for the activity when available.
A race-derived estimate, a heart-rate-and-speed estimate, and a corrected estimate are not interchangeable observations. Trainingload.ai can store multiple VO2max/VDOT estimates from different evidence; note which one produced the value you are interpreting.
3. Classify the pattern
Use several comparable points rather than a single threshold.
Gradual improvement with stable execution
The block may be producing a useful response. Confirm that key workouts are being completed and that the improvement is not caused by a threshold, correction-factor, or sensor change. Usually no immediate plan change is needed.
Flat trend with high recent load
Do not automatically add more volume. Compare ATL, TSB, plan completion, and session quality. The safest first response may be to hold load, reduce one non-essential intensity exposure, and review the next comparable workout.
Decline across comparable sessions
Inspect fatigue, conditions, illness, missed recovery, and data quality. If execution is also deteriorating, protect the next key session with a small reversible adjustment. If only one point fell, investigate the activity instead of rewriting the week.
One abrupt outlier
Open that activity. Check the heart-rate stream, speed or power, pauses, sport classification, maximum-heart-rate setting, and whether the effort was truly comparable. Exclude the point from your decision mentally until its cause is understood.
4. Combine response with training pressure
Use two questions together:
- What pressure was applied? Read CTL, ATL, TSB, and session load.
- What response is visible? Read effective VO2max/VDOT trend, workout execution, and subjective state.
This creates four useful cases:

5. Make one reviewable decision
Choose one of four outcomes:
- Continue: the trend and execution support the current block.
- Hold: keep load stable until the next comparable session.
- Reduce one stressor: shorten, move, or simplify one future workout.
- Fix the evidence: correct settings or data before deciding.
Record the reason, the exact change, and the next comparable activity that will validate it. Do not recalibrate merely to make the chart match an expected number.
Verify the interpretation
- The trend uses one sport and a relevant date range.
- At least several activities are comparable in purpose and data quality.
- Any abrupt outlier was opened and investigated.
- Estimation source or settings changes are separated from real performance change.
- Load, plan execution, and subjective context support the interpretation.
- The decision has a defined next review point.
Troubleshooting
- The VO2Max card is empty: confirm that supported Ready activities contain the required pace/power and heart-rate evidence, then widen the range.
- The trend jumps after changing profile values: maximum heart rate, correction factor, thresholds, or recalculation may change estimates. Compare only under a known, consistent setup.
- Running and cycling disagree: review each sport separately; they use different activity evidence and should not be merged into one performance conclusion.
- A hard race and easy run produce very different values: compare estimation source and workout purpose. Favor repeated comparable observations over unlike sessions.
- The value differs from a watch or lab result: methods and inputs differ. Use each series consistently rather than forcing exact agreement.
- The decline comes with pain or illness: use real symptoms and qualified guidance; the estimate cannot provide medical clearance.
