Plan Lifecycle

Understand draft, active, paused, completed, and canceled plans, and change plan state without losing execution context.

Plan Lifecycle

Plan state controls whether Trainingload.ai treats a schedule as a draft, the current training context, temporarily paused work, or historical record.

Before you change plan state

  • Open the intended plan and confirm its name, goal, dates, and current status.
  • Save or discard any workout edit still open on another device.
  • Review completed, skipped, and linked workouts before ending or deleting a plan.
  • Prefer a lifecycle state over deletion when the plan contains meaningful history.

Draft

Use a draft while building, importing, or reviewing the plan. Draft workouts can be edited without presenting the plan as the athlete's current schedule.

Before activation, verify:

  • Goal and date range.
  • Start date and week alignment.
  • Weekly rhythm and recovery spacing.
  • Sport and workout structure.
  • Threshold-dependent targets.
  • Whether the first week is realistic for current fitness.

Activate

Activation assigns execution context and allows the plan to drive daily views, activity linking, expected load, and AI Coach review.

  1. Open the plan detail page.
  2. Select Activate.
  3. Choose the intended start date when prompted.
  4. Review how plan-relative days map to calendar dates.
  5. Confirm activation.

Verify: the plan status is Active and its workouts appear on the expected calendar days.

Pause and resume

Pause when the plan should temporarily stop guiding daily execution but should remain available. Typical reasons include illness, travel, injury evaluation, or a deliberate break.

Pausing does not erase completed activities or workout links. Before resuming, review whether the remaining dates and workload still make sense; edit the plan rather than pretending the interruption did not happen.

Complete

Complete a plan when its intended block is finished. Review completion rate, actual versus expected load, key activity links, and what should carry into the next block.

Completion is different from cancelation: completion means the plan reached an intentional endpoint, even if some sessions were skipped.

Cancel

Cancel when the plan should no longer be executed and should not be represented as completed. Add context in the plan or coaching record when the reason matters for future decisions.

Delete

Deletion is more destructive than a lifecycle state change. Prefer complete or cancel when the plan is part of meaningful training history. Delete only when the plan is an accidental or disposable draft and the confirmation clearly identifies the intended record.

Workout execution states

Individual planned workouts can be marked complete, skipped, or otherwise updated according to the active plan workflow. A completed activity link is separate evidence: status records the plan decision; the link records which real activity fulfilled the session.

Concurrent edits

Plan records use version-aware updates. If another device or AI action changed the plan after your page loaded, refresh and review the new version before retrying. This prevents an old edit from silently overwriting a newer decision.

Verify the state change

  • The plan detail shows the intended new status.
  • Active-plan, Today, and Calendar surfaces reflect the same execution state.
  • Existing workout completion and activity links remain intact.
  • Pausing or canceling stops the plan from guiding current execution without rewriting history.
  • Completing preserves the plan as an intentional finished block.
  • A newly activated plan maps its first week to the expected calendar dates.

Troubleshooting

  • Activate is unavailable: finish required plan fields, check the date range, and confirm another plan-state rule is not preventing activation.
  • Workouts appear on unexpected dates: compare activation start date, plan-relative day offsets, account time zone, and calendar date.
  • The wrong plan appears current: return to the plan list, compare statuses, and activate only the intended record.
  • Pause or resume does not appear elsewhere: refresh Today, Calendar, and the plan detail on the other device.
  • An update reports a version conflict: reload the plan and reapply the decision to the newest version.
  • Delete is blocked or risky: use Cancel or Complete when history should remain. Delete only the disposable draft identified by the confirmation.

Next steps

  • Continue with Manage an Active Plan to link activities and compare expected versus actual load.
  • Use Calendar to verify scheduled dates.
  • Read AI Coach before applying plan-aware adjustments.
